The exotic-looking tree lily is a real gem in the garden, but should be in the right place for good development and lush flowering. If you would like to change the location later, this is not always possible without any problems.

When and how should you transplant tree lilies?

Tree lilies are best transplanted in spring or fall. Remove the onion from the ground in autumn, overwinter in a cool, dry place and plant in the new location in spring. The plant should not be transplanted during the flowering period in summer.

When is the best time to transplant my tree lily?

Basically, you can transplant the tree lily in spring or autumn. The difficulty in spring, however, lies in finding the bulb in the ground, as the above-ground parts of the plant die in autumn. If you take the bulb out of the ground in the fall, you can put it back in immediately or wait until next spring.

When does the tree lily bloom?

You should be patient with your tree lily. It grows quite large and takes about three years. Only when it reaches its final size does it show its full bloom. But even without flowers, the tree lily is a pretty decoration on your balcony or terrace.

The flowering period of the tree lily is in summer, mainly in the months of July and August. During this time it should under no circumstances be transplanted, which would be technically difficult due to its size.

Can I also plant the tree lily in a pot?

The tree lily can also be cultivated in a pot if you keep a few things in mind. Be sure to place the onion in a sufficiently large and heavy container so that it cannot tip over even when fully grown and gets enough nutrients.

The pot for your tree lily should have a hole in the bottom. Place some old pottery shards or larger pebbles over it so that the hole does not get blocked by leaking soil. This means that excess irrigation water can drain away easily. The care of the tree lily is largely the same as outdoors.

The most important things in brief:

  • Transplanting in spring or autumn is best possible
  • do not transplant during flowering
  • ideal: remove the onion from the ground in autumn and use it elsewhere in spring
  • Repot potted plants every 2 to 3 years

Tip

If you want your tree lily to bloom in a different place next year, remove the bulb from the ground in autumn. After a cool, dark and dry winter, it can be planted in another location.
