For some gardeners it is routine to regularly fertilize all plants in the garden with blue grain. However, fertilization only has the desired effect if you know how this fertilizer works and what needs to be taken into account when fertilizing privet with blue grain.
How do you properly fertilize privet with blue seed?
Privet can be fertilized with blue grain or green grain, with the right time being late April and early August. It is important to use short-term fertilizers sparingly, as over-fertilization can be harmful. A mulch cover is a good alternative to fertilizing privet and prevents over-fertilization.
Fertilize privet with blue grain or green grain
Privet is a very robust shrub that does very well without additional fertilizer. If you still want to fertilize it to stimulate growth and thicken the privet hedge more quickly, you need to consider a few things.
Blue grain and green grain are so-called short-term fertilizers. They need to penetrate the soil to release nutrients. The fertilizer decomposes very quickly and must therefore be given at the right time.
Use blue grain sparingly. Over-fertilization does more harm than good to privet.
The right time to fertilize with blue grain
Privet sprouts twice a year, at the beginning of May and mid-August. This means that Blaukorn must be given beforehand.
It takes around 14 days for the nutrients to penetrate the soil. The privet is therefore fertilized with blue grain or green grain at the end of April and beginning of August.
Fertilize on a rainy day or water the privet sufficiently after fertilizing.
Create mulch cover
A good alternative to fertilizing privet is to create a layer of mulch that is renewed every spring. With this form of fertilization you can't go wrong and over-fertilization is impossible.
The following materials are suitable for mulch blankets:
- Lawn clippings (without seeds)
- Leaves (only he althy leaves)
- Remnants of the privet (cut into small pieces)
- Straw
- other he althy garden waste
The mulching material rots and releases nutrients that penetrate the soil and nourish the privet. At the same time, the mulch prevents weeds from emerging. In addition, the soil does not dry out as quickly. The mulch cover saves you a lot of work.
Tip
Privet can also be grown very well in a bucket as long as it is wide enough. In the pot, the shrub needs regular fertilizer. The substrate should be replaced every two to three years when transplanting.
