The hardy wisteria is very beautiful, but also very poisonous. That's why you shouldn't necessarily plant it in your family garden. There are certainly attractive alternatives, although hardly any with a similarly impressive appearance as wisteria.
Which non-poisonous plants are alternatives to wisteria?
Climbing roses, climbing hydrangeas, vines, akebia, clematis, trumpet flowers and morning glories are alternatives to poisonous wisteria. Hydrangeas and clematis in particular are also available in blue flower varieties.
Alternative climbing plants
Even if the wisteria is a real feast for the eyes with its vigorous growth and flower spikes up to 60 centimeters long, other climbing plants also have their right to exist. Climbing roses, clematis, climbing hydrangea, akebia and grapevine are just a few examples. The trumpet flower and the morning glory are also climbing plants.
Blue flowering plants
Among the climbing plants mentioned, there are also some variants with blue flowers. For example, you can buy a blue-flowering clematis, a climbing morning glory or a climbing hydrangea, which is also blue. It doesn't necessarily have to be a climbing plant, you can also find blue-flowering specimens among the bushes. This includes the real lilac as well as the buddleia or a rhododendron.
The climbing hydrangea
The climbing hydrangea can grow up to 10 m high and grows in sunny to shady locations. Thanks to their adhesive roots, climbing hydrangeas don't necessarily need a trellis, especially not one as stable as wisteria. They also grow well on walls and walls, but also leave visible traces there.
The Clematis
The clematis, also known as clematis, comes in different varieties in terms of size, flowering time and flower color. Here you have a particularly large selection. Wild species are also relatively resistant to root fungi. A location towards the west is considered ideal because the clematis likes the sun, but not too much heat at the roots.
Climbing roses
The climbing roses also impress with an incredible variety of shapes and colors. There are fragrant varieties and particularly fast-growing specimens. You won't find the color blue here, but you will find numerous shades of red, pink and yellow and bright white. Climbing roses prefer an airy place with lots of light.
