Finally there is a wisteria (bot. Wisteria) in your garden and should now provide a pleasant holiday feeling and Mediterranean flair on the terrace. Before that, however, your patience and good care including regular pruning are required.
When does wisteria bloom?
The flowering period of wisteria extends from April to June, with abundant flowering taking place in the sun. A second, less showy bloom may occur in late summer. Regular pruning and a good supply of nutrients and water support the flowering period.
The first wisteria flowers appear in April and delight the eye of the beholder. The lush colors with a seductive scent last until June. Depending on the climate and weather, wisteria blooms a second time in late summer, although not as lushly and magnificently as in spring.
Is there also wisteria with other flower colors?
As the name suggests, the most common flower color is a bright blue. But there are also other varieties that bloom purple, soft pink or even white. However, they need a sunny location to bloom abundantly.
Can I support the blooming of my wisteria?
An unpruned wisteria does not bloom well because it puts its energy into growth. That's why regular pruning is very important. It is best to cut the wisteria once in summer and winter. Also make sure that the plant is well supplied with water and nutrients before and during flowering.
The most important things in brief:
- only blooms after a few years
- first bloom: April to June
- possibly second flowering: in late summer, less lush
- blooms profusely in the sun, sparsely in partial shade, little to no shade at all
Tip
If you want your wisteria to bloom profusely, then be sure to give it a sunny location.
