The foundations for a lushly blooming flower bed are laid during planting. In the following compilation you will find the most important tips for an optimally planted bed.
How do I plant a flower bed correctly?
In order to optimally plant a flower bed, you should pay attention to the correct planting time, prepare the bed correctly, water flowers before planting, maintain planting depth and distance and plant flower bulbs correctly. Then water the plants vigorously.
Note planting time
First of all, this includes the right planting time: You can plant perennials at any time between spring and autumn, you can plant one- and two-year-old summer flowers on the windowsill and put them in the bed in late spring - if possible after the Ice Saints. Flower bulbs, on the other hand, can only be planted at certain times of the year:
- Autumn: tulips, daffodils, ornamental onions, imperial crown
- Spring: lilies, dahlias, begonias, gladiolus, calla lilies
Preparing the flowerbed
Basically, you can create the flower bed in both spring and autumn, although you can also add bulbous plants and summer flowers later. First, plan the bed with perennials and possibly flowering shrubs. It is important to prepare the bed correctly, in which the soil is thoroughly cleared of plant residues, loosened - if necessary also dug up - and improved with plenty of compost. Damp and compacted soils also benefit from drainage.
Water flowers before planting
Before you put the flowers in the now prepared bed, you should first place them in a container with water and let them soak up the moisture thoroughly. This measure later supports perennials and shrubs in particular in the development of new roots and thus helps with growth.
Observe planting depth and spacing
Then first arrange the plants on the bed as you imagine the ideal grouping. Pay attention to the correct planting distance and do not be bothered by gaps that may be too large - the perennials will certainly become much larger than they are at the moment. Once you are happy with the arrangement, you can dig the planting holes and insert the plants. They should not be planted any deeper than they were previously in the container.
Planting flower bulbs correctly
When planting flower bulbs, you must correctly distinguish between the top and bottom, otherwise the shoot cannot push towards the surface. The underside of most types of onions is significantly wider than the top, which is more tapered, and often has a slight root base. Some flower bulbs also need to be watered overnight in a container with lukewarm water before planting.
Tip
Don't forget to water the freshly planted flowers and perennials vigorously.
