Who actually says that a flower bed always has to be rectangular? Round or curved shapes are particularly effective in larger lawns. You can fill these flower beds with the same plants as conventional beds, provided of course that the location is suitable. However, there are a few special points to consider when designing so that the overall result appears harmonious.
How do I create a round flower bed?
To create a round flower bed, first choose a sunny location with enough space. Lay the bed at ground level or as a hill bed and plant it with tall plants in the middle and lower ones at the edge. Secure the edge with lawn curbs.
Selecting the location
While you can create a rectangular flower bed almost anywhere, round shapes take up a lot of space. Such a bed looks best in the middle of a larger open space - such as a lawn. But you can also create it in the classic way as the center of the garden, to which all the paths lead. If, on the other hand, you want to plant in a corner, other shapes are better: Such locations are ideal for pie-shaped or semicircular beds, while longer stretches along a wall, a fence or the wall of a house are ideal for long, narrow and angular systems. Due to its exposed location, such a round bed - the gardener also calls it an island bed - will most likely be in a very sunny location. The choice of plants should be planned accordingly: Not all flowers and perennials can tolerate full sun and heat.
Fill up a flowerbed or plant it at ground level?
You can place the plants in the bed at ground level, but you can also create a round hill bed. This has several advantages: Not only is the flower arrangement more eye-catching due to its elevated position; Hill beds also ensure an adequate supply of nutrients and heat development. To create a hill bed, first dig a deeper pit that you fill with organic material - such as shredded twigs and branches, unripe and ripe compost, grass clippings, leaves, etc. Fine, crumbly potting soil follows at the top, whereby the bed should always have the typical hilly shape.
The optimal design of the round flower bed
No matter whether hilly or ground level, round flower beds are always planted according to this pattern:
- tall flowers and perennials always come in the middle
- the lower a plant is, the more it moves to the edge of the bed
- how to achieve a visually appealing result
- you also ensure that all plants receive enough light
- low ground cover plants also always belong in the foreground

Tip
Choose the plants so that no bare spots appear over the course of the growing season. Above all, make sure to choose flowering plants based on their foliage: pretty foliage makes the bed attractive even after the flowering period.
