A compost can be made of wood or stones. The brick compost is less susceptible to weather conditions. You can make it yourself with little effort.

How can you make your own compost heap out of stone?

To build a compost pile yourself, you need stones, cement, sand and water. The compost wall consists of a base and three walls, while the front remains open. Iron hooks are used to attach a wooden wall as a door.

Preliminary considerations

The compost volume is based on the amount of compost per year and household. On average, 150 liters of kitchen waste is generated per person per year. If you have a garden, the volume of biodegradable waste increases. About five liters of shredded plant residue are produced per square meter of garden area.

In a household with two people, 300 liters of organic waste are generated every year. A 400 square meter garden produces 2,000 liters of green waste. The total volume of 2,300 liters of organic waste is reduced to half in the first rotting phases. For this case study, a compost heap with a volume of 1,200 liters is sufficient to store an entire year's worth of organic waste.

Construction instructions

1. Baseplate

So that you can rearrange the contents more conveniently, a compost measuring 1.5 m x 1.5 m x 1.5 m is recommended. You need around 10 square meters of stones for the base area and three walls. The front wall is not bricked so that you can easily remove the contents.

2. Mix mortar

A bag of cement and three times as much sand are enough for building walls. Mix the mortar (€8.00 at Amazon) freshly with each step. Cement and sand are mixed with water in a ratio of 1:3 until a creamy consistency is created.

3. Cut out base area

Use the spade to dig a base out of the ground. Place the stones directly into the ground and make sure that the stones are level with each other. The cracks are then filled with mortar. Allow the base surface to dry overnight.

4. Building walls

Build the two side walls and the back wall to a height of 1.50 meters. The stones in the higher layer always overlap the joints in the layer below. Wall up iron hooks at the top and bottom of both side walls. You can later hang a wooden wall into these hooks.

5. Build a door

For the wooden wall, you can use an old table top, saw it to size and add two crossbars. The crossbars are used to hook the wall into the holding device.
