A properly managed garden always includes a compost where you can dispose of garden waste and kitchen waste and which you can use to obtain fertilizer for your plants. Composters are available in numerous versions. But you can also build it yourself out of stone with little effort.
How do I build a stone composter?
To build a stone composter, you will need stones (preferably perforated stones), stones for the base, wooden slats and mortar. Create a three-sided masonry wall about one meter high and use wooden slats for the front.
Building compost from stone – materials
- Stones (preferably hole stones)
- Stones for the underground
- Wooden slats
- Mortar / Concrete
Stones are particularly suitable as a material because they do not rot and the composter lasts for many years. It is preferable to use perforated stones for the walls of the composter. This means that the air supply is optimally regulated.
If you have enough space and stones, build a multi-chamber system right away. Then you can easily turn the compost later.
The ideal dimensions are one meter long, one meter wide and one meter high. Basically, you can do it however you see fit.
Base plate not necessary
A base plate is not necessary for a stone composter, only a solid row of stones needs to be laid for the base. The compost has a direct connection to the soil. This prevents too much moisture and allows microorganisms to nest in the compost material.
Wall three sides with perforated bricks up to one meter high. If you don't have any perforated bricks available, move the bricks so that gaps are created for the compost to aerate.
With a multi-chamber system, the rear wall is correspondingly longer. Then put in partition walls.
Wooden front
The front of the compost is formed by wooden slats that you attach horizontally. A guide rail that you attach to the stone walls is a good idea. The wooden slats can then be easily removed. This makes it much easier to turn the compost later.
Not too sunny location
Find a convenient location when building a stone composter. They shouldn't be too sunny. Think about the neighbors who don't necessarily want to have compost right under their noses.
Tip
Compost can even be made in a bucket on the balcony. You can even get compost in the kitchen if you buy a Bokashi bucket.
