In addition to the metre-high conifers, the pine also comes in small varieties. The dwarf trees are ideal for keeping in pots on the terrace or balcony. The species spectrum of the small specimens is nowhere near as extensive as that of the large trees. However, you still have the choice between different types of pine. Learn more about the different, small pine varieties below and choose your favorite.

What types of small pine trees are there?

Small pine species are ideal for keeping in containers and include the conical mountain pine, creeping pine, ball pine and winter yellow dwarf mountain pine. They are characterized by low growth heights, various growth forms and high winter hardiness.

Small pine species

The small forms of the pine are subspecies of the mountain pine. They are also known as dwarf pines. The following small pine species are available in tree nurseries in this country:

  • Cone mountain pine
  • Creeping Jaws
  • Balljaw
  • Winter yellow dwarf mountain pine

The mountain pine cones

The conical mountain pine has a narrow growth. It is only two meters wide and reaches a maximum height of five meters. The cone mountain pine prefers slightly acidic, dry to moderately moist soil in a sunny to partially shaded location. It is hardy and evergreen.

The Creeping Pines

The creeping pine only grows to about 1.5 meters high as it spreads on the ground by creeping. Their dark green needles are ideal for greening any area as long as it is illuminated by the sun. The plant is considered to be extremely hardy.

The Ball Jaws

The shape of the ball pine also plays the eponymous role. The dwarf pine impresses with its round, even growth. Their needle coat is particularly dense. The ball pine remains very small at just 40-60 cm. It places hardly any demands on the soil. You can plant them in either a sunny or partially shaded location.

The winter yellow dwarf mountain pine

While numerous plants shed their needles or leaves in winter, the winter yellow dwarf mountain pine provides color in your garden. The otherwise green needles turn golden yellow in autumn. The flowers in June and July are also beautiful to look at. Male flowers then glow yellow, the female flowers red. The winter-yellow dwarf mountain pine is a shallow-rooted pine and thrives on permeable, humus-rich soils in a sunny or partially shaded location.

Tip

Larger pine species can also be designed with a smaller growth habit. For the bonsai art that comes from Japan, we recommend

  • the Blue Girl Pine
  • and the Japanese dwarf maiden pine
