A beautiful cottage garden and a bulky fence made of wire or even plastic? No, that doesn't work. A fence made of willow, on the other hand, fits in wonderfully with the overall picture and is still an eye-catcher. Especially when it's homemade. This isn't as difficult as you might think. Find out how to do it here.
How do I build a willow fence myself?
To build a willow fence yourself, you need willow rods, wooden posts and some tools. Cut the canes in winter, soak them in water, drive stakes into the ground and alternately braid the canes around the stakes.
Build your own pasture fence
Purchasing the rods
All you need for a homemade electric fence are a few willow branches and some tools, which can be found in every garden shed. You can simply cut the willow rods from your own tree or a free-standing willow tree. It is best to get the branches in winter, as cutting them on a willow is prohibited in summer. Depending on whether you want your fence to continue to grow or keep its shape, you will have to decide on young or old shoots.
Preparation
- Soak the willow rods in water.
- Find a location in your garden.
- Loose the soil at the desired location.
- Drive a row of wooden stakes into the ground.
Instructions
- Begin above the ground, alternating a rod in front of and behind the poles.
- Tighten the rods at the end.
- After a few layers, change the braiding direction.
- Cut the protruding branches.
Various braiding patterns
Depending on when you swap the order in which you place the rods around the posts, different patterns will emerge. Feel free to try it out. Branches of different willow species create a particularly beautiful sight. Most of the time they have different colors. You can also stick the rods vertically into the ground and then braid them together. The great thing about a self-built electric fence is that you can determine the height and length yourself.
