Most raised beds are rectangular. They are the easiest to construct, but may have annoying corners. It can therefore make sense - also for aesthetic reasons - to bevel the corners (this creates a polygon) or to build a round raised bed.
How can I build a round raised bed myself?
A round raised bed can be easily built yourself using materials such as tractor tires, concrete shaft pipes, woven willow branches, gabions, dry stone walls or granite palisades. These materials can be formed and filled into an attractive raised bed without much effort.
Round raised beds created quickly and easily - without building
Of course, not all materials are suitable for building a round raised bed. Long wooden boards, for example, are difficult to bend into the desired shape. However, there are a lot of ways to build a round raised bed in a very simple way:
- by using tractor tires (€27.00 on Amazon)
- through the use of concrete shaft pipes
- through appropriately braided willow branches
- using gabions (wire baskets) that are filled with various materials
- through round walls or dry stone walls
- using upright palisades
- with baskets, barrels, large earthenware vessels or potato sacks
Some of these misused raised beds simply need to be placed in the desired location, filled and planted - it couldn't be easier.
Elegant and durable: Round raised bed made of granite palisades
Granite palisades are not necessarily the cheapest materials for building raised beds, but the result looks very appealing.
These materials and tools you need
For a raised bed with a diameter of 120 centimeters you need the following materials:
- 25 granite palisades (125 centimeters high, 12 x 12 centimeters thick)
- three bags of dry mortar (approx. 60 kilograms)
- Film measuring 3 x 3 meters
- about 100 kilograms of gravel
- about 60 kilograms of grit
- Rabbit wire against voles
- if necessary, weed fleece against stubborn root weeds
- a wheelbarrow of sand for padding wire and weed fleece
At least two people are required for construction.
How to build
Since the raised bed should have a circular shape, a wooden stake is first driven into the center of the intended area. Tie a cord or a piece of string to this and draw a circle around the stake with a radius of 54 centimeters. Now dig out the soil along the marked circular line - the round pit should be around 20 centimeters wide and 60 centimeters deep. The palisades are then sunk upright and about a third of their length into the ground and set up “dry” to form a circle in a bed of gravel and dry mortar. The stone circle is covered with foil on the inside.
Tip
Wedge-shaped gaps between the angular palisades are unavoidable. It is therefore even more important that all palisades are aligned at the same angle - i.e. in an exact circle.
