Many people want a pasture in their own garden. The trees are not only extremely easy to care for, but also impress with their delicate catkins, especially in spring. They also attract many insects and serve as an important source of nectar, especially for bees. If you also want to plant a willow in your garden, the easiest way is to propagate it from cuttings. Thanks to the rapid root formation, you can do this in no time with these instructions.
How can I grow a willow myself from cuttings?
To grow a willow yourself, take slightly woody cuttings from June to July, place them in water or substrate and water sufficiently. After about two weeks, the cuttings root and can be cultivated as a hedge plant, deciduous tree or in a container.
Which branches are suitable?
- The variety you choose doesn't matter.
- You are also free to choose the length.
- Short shoots root a little faster than long ones.
- Only very fresh, green twigs are rather unsuitable.
- It is best to use slightly woody shoots for propagation.
- The best time to take cuttings is from June to July.
- During this time, however, only cutting on your own pasture is permitted.
- Free-standing trees may only be trimmed in winter.
Instructions
- Fill a glass or vase with water.
- Short cuttings to a usable length and place in water.
- Change water regularly.
- Place the cuttings in the ground after about two weeks.
Alternatively, you can also place the cuttings straight into the substrate. It is important that you water the shoots sufficiently. You may also want to provide the willow with a trellis (€44.00 on Amazon).
Usage
If you have grown your willow yourself, you can cultivate it in different ways. It's best to decide on one of the following methods before growing:
Willow as a hedge plant
If you place several cuttings next to each other in the ground, you will soon create an opaque hedge.
Willow as a deciduous tree
Willows as a solitary tree are the most common method. Be sure to pay attention to the dimensions that the deciduous tree takes on after a short time.
Willow in a bucket
For small gardens, growing in a container is recommended. Regular pruning is urgently needed here.
