Planting onions is a relatively easy job and can usually be done by even new gardeners. Since the onions do not place great demands on the soil and the maintenance effort is limited, you can always count on a good duck.
How to properly plant onions in the garden?
To plant onions in the garden, you need a sunny, well-ventilated location with slightly sandy, nutrient-rich soil. Plant onion sets from the end of March, place them in small holes 10 cm apart and water well.
Location and soil
Onions love a sunny location where the wind blows well. The soil should be light sandy, well-drained and full of nutrients. To achieve this, a dose of compost can be incorporated into the soil before sowing. The onions do not like artificial fertilizer or even fresh manure at all. If stable manure is still to be processed, this must be done in the autumn of the previous year. This allows the manure to rot well over the winter months. In the spring, about two weeks before sowing, we dig again to the depth of a spade.
Sowing step by step
If the bed is free of weeds, fertilized and dug up, the onions can be sown. It is easiest to cultivate the onions from the end of March using onion sets.
- Prepare the tools necessary for sowing: a planting cord and a planting stick as well as the basket with the onion sets.
- Mark a straight row in the bed with the planting string.
- Use the plant stick to pre-drill small holes for the bulbs along the string.
- The distance between the individual bulbs should be at least 10 cm so that the tubers can grow well.
- Put the root end of the bulbs so deep into the soil that only about a third of the bulb is visible.
- Offset the planting line by 20 cm and start pre-drilling the holes for the second row.
- Water the freshly sown onions generously.
Cultivating annual onions from seeds
Onion seeds can be cultivated in a cold frame in good potting soil. The seeds are also sown in rows 20 cm apart. The grains are buried about 1 cm deep in the soil. When the first tubes form (end of April/beginning of May), the small bulbs can be transplanted outdoors. They should be ready to harvest in September if growing conditions are good.
