Have you ever seen a rare rainbow eucalyptus? This impressive tree is characterized by its colorful, shimmering trunk, which also gave it its name. You will be amazed by the sight. And now the good news: you can also bring the beautiful tree into your own garden. By growing your own, you can do this without investing a lot of money in a young plant.
How to grow a rainbow eucalyptus from seeds?
To successfully grow a rainbow eucalyptus from seeds, you need permeable substrate, such as potting soil with coconut humus, and a warm, sunny location. Place the seeds on the moist substrate without covering them and wait until the shoots are about 10 cm tall to transplant them.
Cuttings or seeds?
Growing eucalypts from cuttings is not particularly recommended. Growing from seeds promises much more success. You can get these at the tree nursery (€3.00 on Amazon), although you should search online for rainbow eucalyptus seeds. The tree is considered very exotic and is therefore not represented in every range. Do you already own a rainbow eucalyptus? Then you can of course also take the seeds from the existing plant.
Substrate
So that the rainbow eucalyptus can develop well, a specially mixed substrate is an advantage. To do this, select
- growing soil
- Coconut humus
- Conventional sand
- Birms
- Perlite
- or peat
It is particularly important that the substrate is permeable. Waterlogging damages the rainbow eucalyptus.
Instructions
- Fill a nursery pot with a mixture of the above types of soil.
- Place the seeds on the surface and press them very lightly.
- Keep the growing soil moist.
- Place the cultivation container in a sunny place at a temperature of 20-25°C.
- In contrast to conventional eucalypts, where the germination period usually takes several weeks, the rainbow eucalyptus germinates after just five days.
- Once the shoots have reached a length of around 10 cm, transplant the rainbow eucalyptus into a larger pot.
