On top of that, you can enjoy green asparagus in spring, which of course tastes twice as good if you grow it yourself. With these instructions and care tips, you'll be able to grow it in no time.
How can I successfully grow and care for green asparagus?
To successfully grow green asparagus, you need a sunny and airy location with loose, sandy, water-permeable soil and a pH value of 5.5-6. Plant asparagus in mid-May and ensure adequate watering, fertilization and weed control during the growing phase.

Sowing or planting green asparagus
- prepare the bed by loosening the soil and removing roots and weeds
- Dig a trench 40 cm deep and 20-30 cm wide. A stretched cord can help with this
- keep the excavation nearby
- add a 10cm layer of rotted compost to the trench. Then pour a 5 cm thick layer of the excavated material on top
- Young plants from stores or online are planted in the ground in mid-May after the ground frost has subsided. The outside temperature should then be at least 15°C
- Alternatively, you can also take seeds from existing stalks. However, this type of propagation is not very promising and very time-consuming
- maintain a planting distance of 40 cm
- the roots must not come into contact with the compost layer
- now fill the trench with the excavation
- Immediately after planting, pour a handful of complete fertilizer onto the bed
