So that we can enjoy the delicate spring bloomers in spring, the appropriate preparations must be made in the fall of the previous year. The flower bulbs can establish themselves in the soil over the winter and then sprout at the right time.
When and how should you plant spring bloomers?
Spring bloomers such as tulips, crocuses, anemones, grape hyacinths and daffodils should be planted in autumn, around August and September. Plant the bulbs in loose, weed-free soil with the tip upwards and water them.
Preparations for planting
In August or September the gardener begins preparing for spring. Now is exactly the right time to plant the onion plants. This means that the bulbs can form sufficient roots before the frosts in winter. Early flowering perennial plants also belong in the ground now so that they can take root and sprout well in spring.
Some tips for preparation:
- Early blooming bulbs like crumbly soil, so loosen the soil before planting.
- Removing weeds
- The tip of the onion points upwards.
- The soil must not be too wet, if necessary mix in sand.
- Don't forget to water after planting.
Planting spring flowers
Early bloomers can be grown outdoors or in pots.
pot planting
The buckets are filled with good potting soil and placed on a Styrofoam plate (€14.00 on Amazon) to protect against frost. If the correct planting depth is observed (usually stated on the packaging), the onions are planted in the ground. A brushwood layer serves as frost protection from above.
Outdoor planting
The procedure here is similar to that of planting in containers, except that a vole basket can be used when digging the planting hole (about 15 cm deep). It protects the onions from damage caused by feeding. A 2 cm thick layer of sand goes into the basket and then the onions on top. Finally, they are covered with soil and watered.
the most famous early bloomers
Early bloomers, which have become an indispensable part of our gardens, include
- Tulips with an incredible variety of colors and shapes
- Crocuses that poke their noses into the light from February onwards, often through a blanket of snow. They are only 10 cm high and come in many colors.
- Spring anemones bloom from March and grow to a height of around 15 cm. They are available in the colors white, blue, pink, golden yellow.
- The graceful grape hyacinth blooms in white, blue and purple until April. It likes to grow wild under trees and perennials.
- Daffodils or daffodils herald the wedding of spring. As mini daffodils they only grow to a height of 10 cm, but normally reach up to 45 cm. Different shades of white and yellow are also available here.
