Strawberries are a must in any garden. Their sweet aroma combined with the juicy pulp ensure exciting taste experiences. If you want to enjoy strawberries throughout the season, combine early, middle and late varieties.
Which strawberry varieties are suitable for the home garden?
Strawberry varieties for the home garden are divided into early, medium and late ripening varieties, as well as monthly strawberries. Examples include 'Darselect', 'Honeoye', 'White Dream' (early), 'Polka', 'Korona', 'Sonata' (middle), 'Symphony', 'Salsa', 'Mieze Schindler' (late) and ' Selva', 'Ostara', 'Mara de Bois' (monthly strawberries).
Early varieties
If you can't wait to enjoy sweet strawberries, we recommend early-ripening varieties. They bear red fruits from mid-May when the weather is warm. Early varieties can bear fruit until the end of June. For a high yield, you should plant at least two square meters.
Strawberries for early enjoyment:
- ‘Darselect’: French variety that is often planted in pick-your-own fields
- 'Honeoye': improved breeding form of the 'Lambada' variety, which is resistant to diseases
- ‘White Dream’: white fruits with a sweet aroma reminiscent of pineapple
Medium varieties
If you have already harvested the fruits of your early varieties, strawberries of the middle varieties will slowly ripen. Fruit ripening often overlaps with strawberry harvest from early bearing plants.
Summer varieties:
- 'Polka': adaptable and undemanding variety for every garden
- ‘Korona’: tightly upright growth, so that the fruits can be harvested better
- ‘Sonata’: suitable for cool climates, very productive
Late varieties
These plants get a lot of hours of sunshine and develop tasty, large fruits from the end of June. With these varieties you can enjoy the strawberry season to the fullest. The fruit harvest lasts until September.
Strawberries with harvest time until autumn:
- ‘Symphony’: very good yield, high fruit firmness
- ‘Salsa’: very appealing fruits that taste intensely aromatic
- 'Mieze Schindler': old favorite variety whose fruits are ideal for making jam.
Monthly strawberries
These varieties are known as remontant strawberries. They come from wild strawberries and impress with sweet fruits that can be harvested until autumn. The varieties produce a particularly large number of strawberries between June and July. After a period of rest, fruits develop again in autumn. Since the plants grow compactly, they are ideal for planting in containers (€79.00 on Amazon).
Multiple-bearing varieties:
- 'Selva': very firm fruits with a fine aroma, easy to cultivate
- ‘Ostara’: lush flower development between July and November
- ‘Mara de Bois’: intense aroma reminiscent of wild strawberries
