Fruit trees never grow naturally in a way that would be suitable for espaliers. Most of the shoots have to go, while the rest will form a portable structure over time. In order for this to succeed, these branches must be fixed to the scaffolding from the start.
How do you properly secure espalier fruit?
To attach espaliered fruit, first determine the espalier shape and build a suitable framework. Cut away excess shoots in spring and attach the remaining shoots to the framework with special branch clips or strong twine. Make sure that the fastening material does not cut in.
First determine the shape
The binding of the branches is determined by the desired espalier shape. Once this has been chosen and implemented through bold cuts, it must be maintained for the following years.
Building the scaffolding
Before planting, prepare the scaffolding that is best suited for the chosen espalier shape. In any case, it should be resilient and remain weather-resistant for a long time. It's particularly cheap if you build the scaffolding yourself.
vaginas
Before you start attaching the scaffold shoots, you first have to cut all the “superfluous” shoots from the espaliered fruit. The ideal time for such shaping cuts is spring.
Securing fruit on espalier
In the beginning, the shoots of fruit trees are still thin and flexible. They can be easily attached to the scaffolding. Best with:
- special branch clips
- simple, sufficiently strong twine
Tip
Over time, branches become thicker. Make sure that the fastening material does not cut into it. Renew if necessary.
