The frost moth caterpillars are very hungry and are able to eat an entire fruit tree bare. The pests can be controlled quite easily and in an environmentally friendly manner using glue rings. You can find out how to create these correctly in this article.
How do you properly attach glue rings for pest control?
Glue rings can effectively prevent pest infestation on fruit trees by attaching them to the middle of the trunk at the end of September, attaching them well and fixing them at the top and bottom. Be sure to treat all trees in the garden and their support posts to completely deter pests.
Create glue rings for pest control
Since the females of the lesser frost moth have to crawl up the bark of trees to lay their eggs, an infestation can be prevented very effectively using glue rings. It is important to note the following points:
- Place the rings made of special paper around the tree trunks at the end of September.
- Don't forget the support posts so that the animals don't get up this detour.
- Put the sticky stripes on all the trees in the garden. This means they cannot be used as alternative accommodation. Since the caterpillars can be carried to other trees by the wind, unintentional nesting in the trees equipped with a glue ring cannot be ruled out, so only protect them.
Procedure:
- Attach glue rings approximately in the middle of the trunk.
- The sticky paper strips must be positioned so that they cannot be avoided by neighboring shoots or tall grass.
- Brush the trunk thoroughly clean in the affected area. All loose pieces of bark must be completely removed.
- Stuff the wells well with paper. There must be no slits left through which the female beetles could crawl upwards.
- The glue rings (€9.00 at Amazon) are made of tear-resistant special paper with a covered adhesive side. Place the strip around the tree trunk to determine the required length including a few centimeters of overlap.
- Cut.
- Attach to the trunk with the adhesive side facing outwards. The paper must lie tightly and without wrinkles.
- Fix at the top and bottom with a binding wire.
Tip
If you only notice the infestation when the offspring of the small frost moth have already hatched, you can still take environmentally friendly countermeasures because there are various effective remedies. For example, if the outside temperature is 15 degrees, you can treat the tree with the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, which destroys the caterpillars without harming other insects.
