By laying a drip hose in the garden, watering your beds almost happens by itself. Simply plug it in and get water! But where does the water come from? Of course from the rain barrel. Connecting a drip hose here is child's play.
How do I connect a drip hose to a rain barrel?
To connect a drip hose to a rain barrel, place the barrel elevated (approx.1m), lay out the hose, closed with a stopper, in the garden, mark outlet points, poke holes in them and lead the open end of the hose into the bin. Alternatively, the hose can be connected to the outlet tap or with a separate hole.
Instructions
You don't have to spend a lot of money for drip irrigation. You probably have most of the utensils in stock. Otherwise, all the necessary materials are available inexpensively in stores (€39.00 on Amazon). The system can be installed quickly in just a few steps.
Material
- a rain barrel
- if necessary, a hill or a platform (see below)
- a garden hose
- Hammer and nail
- a stopper
Build your own drip irrigation
- Place your rain barrel in an elevated location (about 1m above the ground).
- Lay the hose in the garden.
- Compact one end with a plug.
- Connect all plants to be watered.
- Mark the hose with a dot where the water will later come out.
- Later, use a hammer and nail to poke small holes into the drip hose.
- Fill the hose with water.
- Place the open end in the rain barrel.
Connection options
The method described above is the simplest variant. To stop the flow of water, you must manually remove the hose from the rain barrel. Alternatively, you can also connect the drip hose to the outlet tap, which you then only have to turn on and off. Or you can use these instructions to drill a hole in your rain barrel and attach the drip hose to a separate location.
What to pay attention to?
So that the water flows into the hose independently and without a pump, a water pressure of at least 0.5 bar is required. Accordingly, the bin must be placed slightly higher. Under this link you can read how to build a suitable base yourself.
