Anyone who marvels at the blossoming of their spice bark in summer would like to flood their garden with even more yellow flowers! If you are one of them, then don't let your enthusiasm slow you down! If you have to start from scratch, you can try to get a few seeds.
How to propagate spice bark?
Spice bark can be propagated by cuttings and sowing seeds. Choose semi-ripe cuttings (min. 15 cm long) and plant them in potting soil. When sowing, seeds must be moistened and sown in seed soil, then kept in a bright and warm place.
The possibilities
Two paths lead to a new spice bark. Which of these you choose depends primarily on what source material you have available. This is possible:

Propagation of cuttings
The cuttings that can be used for propagation must only be half-ripe. It shouldn't be difficult to discover them on a spice bark. It produces so many shoots that it can be cut at any time without affecting its appearance.
Since the enormous growth drive of this plant requires topiary cuts anyway, propagation can be linked to cutting. So you don't have to cut extra.
Procedure
- Select half-ripe, he althy cuttings at least 15 cm long.
- Remove the bottom leaves.
- Fill a small pot with potting soil for each cutting (€6.00 on Amazon).
- Insert the cutting a few centimeters deep.
- Moisten the soil gently. During the entire rooting phase, neither the soil nor the air should be too moist.
- Choose a suitable location. For example, a bright, dry room or winter garden. The temperature should be between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius.
- When the first signs of above-ground growth appear, cut off the top so that the young spice bark branches. Pruning must be continued regularly so that the cutting develops into a compact plant.
Tip
The spice bark grows quickly and can reach heights of up to three meters. Therefore, be proactive when repotting and choose a larger pot straight away.
Sowing seeds
Sowing is not recommended because spice bark seeds are not available everywhere in the plant trade. That's a weak argument. Because in times of online shopping, even rare seeds can reach us without much effort and in a very short time. If you already have a spice bark, it will give you free seeds every fall. They are also suitable for sowing.
Instructions for sowing
- Roughen seeds with sandpaper
- soak in lukewarm water for a day
- Sow 0.5 cm deep in seed soil
- light and keep warm at approx. 25 °C
- keep evenly moist
The seeds will germinate after 2 to 6 weeks. The work steps of pricking out, transplanting and topping follow soon afterwards. You have to overwinter the young spice barks in the house just like adult specimens.
