How to propagate Java moss in the aquarium?
To propagate Java moss in the aquarium, divide the existing moss into smaller pieces and attach them to stones, roots or decorative objects. Provide adequate light, regular water changes and liquid fertilizer to promote growth.
Natural propagation
In nature, Java moss reproduces as follows: It forms brown capsules containing spores. After they are ripe, the capsules open and the spores are released. They are carried away to other places where they settle and develop into new plants.
However, spore formation is rarely triggered. This is because Java moss thrives even under unfavorable conditions and poor lighting. In other words: In nature there is rarely a need for new specimens.
Spores in the aquarium
Reproduction by spores is not possible in the aquarium. Because the brown capsules are not formed under water. This means that this method of propagation is not suitable for home use.
Simple propagation option
Although Java moss does not form spores in the aquarium, reproduction is possible almost at any time. To do this, we simply cut the existing moss in half or, if necessary, separate it into even more parts. A new Java moss plant can even grow from very small pieces.
