Sometimes you hear or read that the traditional planting time for perennials is spring. In fact, for most plants in this genus, it makes much more sense to plant them in the fall. We reveal why this is so in our article.
Which perennials can you plant in autumn?
Almost all hardy perennials can be planted in autumn, ideally between the end of September and mid-October. Avoid planting frost-sensitive perennials in the fall as they are more likely to thrive in the spring.
These perennials are suitable for fall planting
In principle, almost all perennials are suitable for planting in autumn. Especially the hardy plants that you can easily overwinter prefer to start life in the “third season”.
Which perennials you should NOT plant in fall
There is an exception to the “autumn rule”: frost-sensitive perennials want to be planted in spring in order to thrive better.

If you plant your perennials in the fall, you should do it between the end of September and mid-October if possible - i.e. in early fall. At this point in time there are some aspects that encourage he althy, magnificent growth:
- The perennials have already completed their above-ground growth.
- The roots of the plants can continue to grow well in warm soil.
Ideally, the temperatures will remain nice and mild for a few weeks after planting until winter makes its presence known. Sufficient rainfall should also be ensured. Under such conditions, the perennials usually manage to stabilize their root system enough to survive the cool season unscathed. You can then prepare wonderfully for spring.
Attention: We expressly advise you to plant your (hardy) perennials by mid-October at the latest. Later, there may be too little time for the plants to develop a strong, robust root system.
What you need to consider when planting perennials in autumn
It is relatively easy to plant perennials. You don't need any experience to master this task. However, there are a few points to consider, especially these:
- Each perennial has certain requirements for the location (sun versus shade, soil, protected from the wind, etc.). Fulfill her this!
- Stick to the recommended planting distances in the bed.
- It is important not to leave the perennials without soil for an excessively long time when planting.
