The Amazon sword plant belongs to the frog spoon family and originally comes from South America. It is considered to be very easy to care for and, due to its size and fast growth, is particularly suitable for larger aquariums. Their propagation is quite easy.
How do I propagate an Amazon sword plant?
The Amazon sword plant reproduces independently through daughter plants that develop on inflorescences under ideal growth conditions. Provide sufficient light, nutrients, medium hard water and water temperatures of 20-30°C to promote reproduction.
Are there different ways of propagation?
The different types of sword plants can be propagated in different ways. With the Amazon sword plant (bot. Echinodorus bleheri), also available in stores as the broad-leaved sword plant, you don't have to do much. It reproduces independently by forming daughter plants.
Different ways of propagation:
- Division of rhizomes
- Young plants on the inflorescences
Reproduction through daughter plants
The prerequisite for the formation of daughter plants are ideal growth conditions. Since the Amazon sword plant is very easy to care for, this shouldn't be difficult for you. The plant, up to 50 or 60 centimeters high, likes to grow out of the water and then forms inflorescences. However, your sword plant needs sufficient light and nutrients.
Small mini plants grow on the inflorescences over time, but they can only form roots when there is sufficient moisture. However, they root poorly in dry conditions. You should therefore regularly submerge the plants or fix them in the water with their “feet”. This is how you stimulate root formation.
Caring for young plants
If your young plants have formed numerous and not too dainty roots, you can separate them from the mother plant and plant them on the bottom of the aquarium. As a rule, the plants grow quite quickly. Remember that these little sword plants grow quickly and will soon become as large as the mother plant.
A water temperature of around 20 °C to 30 °C is ideal for growing Amazon sword plants. The water can be medium hard to hard (dGH between 2° and 15°). The pH-Wet should be in the middle range between 5.5 and 9.0. To fertilize it is best to use special fertilizer for aquarium plants (€11.00 on Amazon).
Tip
Under optimal conditions, you don't have to worry about propagating your Amazon sword plant, just remove the daughter plants and take good care of them.
