Pennigkraut occurs wild in nature in our latitudes. But it is also specifically cultivated in the garden as a ground cover. It grows hanging in the balcony box and blooms all summer long. But is it also suitable as a pure houseplant?

Is pennywort suitable as a houseplant?

The pennywort can be used as a houseplant by growing it in hanging baskets or combining it with other plants. It requires a sunny location, constant moisture, regular fertilization and pruning for care. Cuttings are suitable for propagation.

Pennigwort in the aquarium

The aquarium offers us an opportunity to cultivate pennywort indoors. Anyone who has such a basin can plant the pennywort in it. As a swamp plant, it feels comfortable in the water element.

The shoots grow upright and are covered with numerous round, green leaves. If the tank is open at the top, they can also protrude out of the water. The pennywort can also show its yellow flowers above the water, but not under water.

As a houseplant in a pot

Pennigkraut is rarely planted as a purely houseplant. This may be because there are so many different houseplants on offer and the choice doesn't fall on this herb. We've also gotten used to admiring it as a pond plant, so its existence as a houseplant seems somehow strange.

Practical experience, however, shows that pennywort is also suitable for permanent residence indoors. Since it forms long shoots, it is ideal for planting in a hanging basket. It is also possible to plant them together with other houseplants as long as they complement each other visually and match your needs.

Suitable location

In the room, the pennywort likes a sunny location and temperatures that are not too high. For example, it thrives well on the west window. Lots of sun combined with a limited pot would all too easily create a dry environment, which this plant doesn't like.

Required Care

The pennywort in the house must above all be kept constantly moist. The soil in the pot must never dry out. At the same time, waterlogging must not form. These are other components of his care:

  • regular fertilization with a liquid fertilizer
  • Pruning for denser growth or as a border

Tip

Prunings offer a good opportunity to propagate pennywort from cuttings. For example, to plant the balcony boxes.
