Martens are not allowed to be hunted and caught by everyone. That's why do-it-yourselfers plagued by martens often only have home remedies to get rid of the animal. Below you will find out which home remedies help and how else you can ensure that the marten runs away.
Which home remedies help against martens?
Home remedies for martens can include smells such as citrus scents, cloves, toilet stones, vinegar, tea tree oil, mothballs and camphor leaves, as well as hot substances such as chili or pepper and ultrasonic noises. The combination of smells and sounds is effective in permanently repelling martens.
Catch martens?
Martens are not protected. However, they are subject to hunting law, which is why they can only be hunted and caught by hunters - and only outside the closed season. Since there are severe pen alties for violations, you should rather resort to home remedies.
Effective home remedies against martens
Martens - like most wild mammals - have a very sensitive nose and good ears. You can take advantage of both:
Smells against martens
There are different scents that martens can't stand; either because they remind you of enemies or because they are simply too obtrusive. The former include:
- Dog hair
- Cat hair
- Urine from dogs, cats or foxes
Cat or dog hair or urine can be obtained from friends with pets; Fox urine can be purchased online. A “real animal”, i.e. a cat or a dog, works even better. However, both should be fully grown in order to fight the marten.
The pungent smells that martens can't stand include:
- Citrus scents (sliced lemons, essential oils, etc.)
- Carnations
- Toilet stones
- Vinegar
- Tea tree oil (also great against other pests such as aphids)
- Mothballs
- Camphor Leaves
Tip
The following applies here: more helps more. Combine wildly strong smells and reapply them regularly, because scents (especially in the form of essential oils) disappear quickly.

Martens always come back
Martens usually have several hiding places in their territory of several hundred square meters and often stay away for some time. But they always come back. So be persistent in adding scents to entice the marten to turn around when he returns.
Double effect: spicy home remedies against martens
Chili or pepper also helps particularly well against martens, and in two ways: On the one hand, the sharp smell is unpleasant for them, and on the other hand, they absorb the substance when cleaning. Of course, the heat is anything but pleasant for the martens - like us - so they will avoid the place in the future.
Sounds against martens
Good hearing can be fatal for martens: You can purchase special ultrasound devices from specialist retailers (€29.00 on Amazon) that emit sounds that are imperceptible to our ears, but are very unpleasant for the marten. Alternatively, you can set up several wind chimes; radios are also recommended. Martens like peace and quiet and will change hiding places if there is constant noise.
Tip
Here too, the more the better. For an optimal result, combine noise with scent to make the marten's stay as unpleasant as possible.
Close entrances
No matter which option you choose, you should definitely close all entrancesafter you are sure that the marten has left Under no circumstances should you let the marten in lock in his hiding place. Close window openings, gutters and other entry points with wire or special marten protection.
Note closed season
Do you have a female marten with cubs in the attic? It's no fun, but expulsion is out of the question in this case. The closed season for martens is between the beginning of March and mid-October and chasing or even killing them is strictly forbidden at this time. Wait for the four months of rearing and then block all entrances to prevent further nest building.
