You have to cut shaped hedges regularly so that they don't get too big or wide and grow dense from top to bottom. In addition to the legal framework, you must observe various basic rules, including those regarding the weather. Since pruning in sunny weather is taboo, some garden owners ask themselves whether the green fencing can alternatively be shortened in rainy weather.
Can you cut a wet hedge?
Cutting a wet hedge is generally possible as long as there is improvement in the weather and the plants can dry out in the next few hours. However, be sure to protect electrical work equipment from moisture to avoid electric shock or short circuit.
Cutting back wet hedges
In principle, it is not a problem if the hedge is wet or if it rains lightly during your pruning project. However, there should be improvement in the weather in sight so that the plants can dry out in the next few hours.
The reason: On very wet days, the risk that the bushes will be attacked by harmful organisms increases significantly. There is a risk of fungal infestation, which could damage the hedge plants.
Pay attention to the tools
The other thing that speaks against cutting hedges in rainy weather is that you should also protect your tools from getting wet. Regardless of whether it is an electric hedge trimmer or a battery-powered model, the electronic tools should be protected from water, otherwise there is a risk of electric shock.
Make sure that the extension cable is suitable for outdoor use. If it has recently rained or the meadow is still damp, moisture could otherwise penetrate and cause a short circuit.
What time is right?
- The optimal cutting time is in the winter months of October to February, because in Germany, according to the Federal Nature Conservation Act, hedges are not allowed to be heavily pruned from March to the end of September.
- However, experts recommend light topiary pruning at the end of August, as there is a risk of frost damage if pruned later.
- Before summer pruning, make sure that there are no more birds nesting in the hedge.
- If you use a hedge trimmer in winter, you should take a look at the thermometer: it shouldn't be colder than five degrees below zero, as the branches could break in the event of frost. In addition, a clean cut is then hardly possible and the wound heals more slowly.
Tip
A radical trimming of the hedge is only recommended in spring. At this point, the plants will sprout vigorously and the enclosure will quickly appear attractive green again.
