Cut flowers bring the charm of nature into your home. No longer supplied by the roots, the colorful room decoration needs good care. This means that the flower magic lasts for many days and the floral splendor does not wither so quickly.
How do I cut flowers correctly?
Use a sharp knife when cutting flowers. Cut soft stems straight and hard stems at a slight angle to allow water absorption. Then place flowers in a clean vase with fresh water without submerging the leaves. Cut again every two days to avoid putrefactive bacteria.
The correct bleed
This is a must for flowers, because they are sensitive little ones that react very sensitively to incorrect treatment.
- Always use a sharp knife when cutting.
- Scissors are not suitable as they will crush the ends of the handles.
- Flowers with soft stems, such as tulips or gerberas, cut straight.
- If the flower stems are hard like roses or hydrangeas, move the knife at an angle and pull slightly. This increases the area with which the flowers can absorb water.
- Twigs are also cut in this way. Knocking these flat with a hammer is no longer common practice, as the frayed tissue causes rot to form more quickly.
Cut the flowers even if this has already been done at the florist. Next, fill the vase with water, making sure to only submerge the stems, not the leaves. If they come into contact with water, they would quickly begin to rot, which would affect the durability of the flowers.
Do we often need to be cut?
- To ensure that cut flowers last for a long time, cleanliness is the top priority. Therefore, the vase should always be very clean and filled with fresh water every day.
- Rinse the vase thoroughly beforehand. This removes bacteria and the flowers do not wilt as quickly.
- Re-cut bouquets at least every two days, as putrefactive bacteria form at the cut.
What else can I do to ensure durability?
- Choose a sufficiently large vase. Flowers don't like to be squeezed into a container.
- Bouquets can remain tied as they are then easier to care for.
- Do not place the flowers in direct sunlight. The heat from the sun's rays causes them to evaporate more water than they can absorb and the flowers would wilt more quickly.
Tip
Flowers don't like tap water that has a lot of lime. If you add a few splashes of lemon juice or vinegar to the water, the colorful room decorations will feel much more comfortable and stay fresh for a long time.
