Flowers in the garden and on the balcony are often frost-resistant and can easily be left outdoors if some winter protection is provided. Unfortunately, many balcony flowers are not winter-proof. However, these do not have to be disposed of at the beginning of the cold season because you can overwinter them in the house.
How can you properly overwinter balcony flowers?
In order to overwinter balcony flowers successfully, deciduous plants should be kept cool and dark, while evergreen plants should be kept bright. Hardy outdoor plants need protection from straw mats, fir greens or leaves, while planters should be placed on wooden slats and insulated.

By overwintering the flowers, you can save a lot of money on buying new ones next year. There are some basic rules that you should keep in mind:
- Plants that shed their leaves are placed in a dark, frost-free but cool room.
- Evergreen flowers are placed in a bright location, for example a window in the stairwell.
- If there is enough space, balcony flowers can remain in the box. Alternatively, you can remove a few specimens from the planter, cut them back, remove the soil and overwinter them in boxes.
- You can unpot geraniums, put the root ball in a bag and hang the flowers upside down in a place that is not too warm to save space.
Protecting hardy flowers
Frost-hardy flowering plants such as hydrangeas, roses or sedum can remain outdoors even in winter. To protect them from severe frost, they are covered from above with straw mats, fir greenery or leaves.
Place hardy flowers grown in planters on wooden slats. This prevents the roots from freezing on the cold flooring of your patio.
In very rough locations, it is also recommended to insulate balcony boxes and tubs from the outside. Suitable for this:
- Pubble foil,
- old jute sacks,
- Garden fleece.
Tip
If you want to enjoy your garden, balcony and terrace even in winter, you can make the cold protection decorative. For example, tie thick cords around the protective jute layer and decorate them with a little pine green. In addition to the pine branches, you can stick some evergreen branches into the ground and decorate them according to the season.
