Hardly any climbing plant can decorate entire walls as decoratively as the trumpet flower. However, in order for it to be able to do this year after year, it has to survive harsh winters unscathed. Can she do this at any location and always without our help?
How do you properly overwinter a trumpet flower?
To overwinter a trumpet flower successfully, protect young plants and frost-sensitive species with leaves, fir branches and fleece. Hardy potted plants should be protected or overwintered in a frost-free garage, surrounded by fleece, Styrofoam and leaves.
Winter hardiness of different species
The American trumpet flower and the hybrid large trumpet are hardy down to -20 °C. You can therefore grow permanently outdoors with us. A place sheltered from the wind is still an advantage.
The Chinese trumpet flower, on the other hand, is so sensitive to frost that it cannot survive our winters outside. For this reason it makes sense to cultivate it in a mobile pot. Because this means she can and must escape into the house in good time before the frost.
Protecting young plants
Even the winter-hardy species only develop their full resistance to frost over time. We therefore still need to protect young plants in the first three years of life.
- Cover the root area thickly with leaves
- Put fir branches in the ground around the root base
- Trails with fleece etc. if necessary. wrap
Tip
The trumpet flower can also be propagated easily at home. It is better to keep these delicate plants indoors during the first winter and only plant them in their permanent location in the spring.
Frost-threatened potted plants
All hardy trumpet flowers that grow in pots are more exposed to frost than planted specimens. Your pot is surrounded by icy cold on all sides, allowing the soil to freeze more quickly. That's why these trumpet flowers can only be exposed to light frost. You can achieve this by overwintering the plant in a garage, for example.
If the bucket has to be left outside, take appropriate protective measures:
- Place the pot protected from wind and rain
- Place Styrofoam underneath
- Cover the pot with fleece or raffia mats
- Cover the root area with leaves or pine branches
