Enjoying the first warm days on the balcony and terrace is part of the beginning of spring for many people. But as temperatures rise, bees also come out of their winter quarters. Attracted by sweet treats, they become a nuisance at the coffee table.
How to keep bees away naturally?
To keep bees away, you can move bee plants, plant repellent plants such as lemongrass, lavender and basil or use odorants such as coffee grounds, cloves, tea tree oil, scented candles or incense sticks. Avoid open, sugary foods and drinks.
Moving bee plants
If you cultivate flowering plants in pots on the terrace, bees will find ideal sources of food. They are attracted to the supply of nectar and like to buzz around the coffee table when they are nearby. Therefore, place the pots some distance away from the area where flying pollinators are undesirable.
Set repellent plants
A number of aromatic spice plants are avoided by bees. These include lemongrass, lavender and basil. Put the herbs in a pot and place several of them on the balcony and terrace. The planted containers on the windowsill prevent the insects from getting lost into the apartment through open windows.
Use odorants
Bees don't like certain scents that are pleasant to humans. Since the aromas are volatile, you have to renew the products regularly. Wind and drafts reduce the deterrent effect outdoors, so you should place several scented substances around the coffee table.
Bees don't like that at all:
- Coffee grounds: distribute into bowls and place on the balcony table
- Cloves: grind finely and sprinkle over half a lemon
- Tea tree oil: let it evaporate in an aroma lamp
- Scented candles: let burn with citrus aroma
- Incense sticks: help regardless of the scent used
Insect sprays and copper coins
Bees are protected and must not be killed or harmed. Therefore, insect sprays are not an option to get rid of the insects. Since chemical products often have a negative impact on human he alth, you can save yourself the trouble of purchasing such products.
It is a myth that pennies containing copper repel insects. Although the heavy metal is toxic to humans and animals, coins placed on it have no effect. Instead, make sure not to leave sugary foods and drinks open.
Tip
Did you know that there are often tiny wild bees hanging around between the flowers? There are a variety of species that thrive in bee-friendly gardens and are not interested in humans.
