Propagate young plants for your own garden can not only be inexpensive, but also a very fulfilling hobby. Read here how you can easily grow daisies of different types from seeds and what you need to keep in mind.
How do I grow daisies from seeds?
Growing daisies from seeds begins with sowing germinable seeds in February to May. You need potting soil, a bright, warm place and consistent moisture. After about 14 days, the daisies will germinate and can later be planted outdoors after the ice saints.
Where can I get germinable daisy seeds?
Garden shopsand also supermarkets offer a large selection of seeds for the different types of daisies. The Bornholm daisy, which is available in different colors, is particularly popular, but strictly speaking it is a different genus than the “real” daisy. As an alternative to buying, you can of course also collect and sow the seeds of your existing daisies. However, there are one or two things to keep in mind.
When and how do I best sow daisies?
When sowing daisies you should pay particular attention to two things: daisies germinate in light and they are not hardy. Cultivation indoors can beginfrom the end of February, sowing outdoors only in May.
Sowing in individual steps:
- Fill the pot with potting soil (€6.00 on Amazon)
- Moisten the soil
- Sprinkle seeds and cover only thinly with soil (light germinator!)
- Wet the seeds carefully, preferably with a spray bottle
- Place the pot in a bright, warm place out of direct sunlight
- Keep substrate evenly moist
The first seedlings should be visible after about 14 days.
How do I properly care for daisy seedlings?
At the beginning you should keep the growing substrate evenly moist without it being wet. If your seedlings are around 10 to 15 cm tall, you can prick out the plants. But this isn't absolutely necessary if you haven't sown too densely. Your daisies do not require any special care until they are planted out. If night frosts are no longer expected, the plants can be permanently moved into the garden or onto the balcony.
When can I plant out my young daisies?
The daisy is not hardy, so it can only be planted in the gardenafter the Ice Saintsin May. Even one frosty night can be enough for the plants to freeze. Young plants are also quite sensitive to direct sunlight and the delicate leaves can easily burn. Slowly get your daisies used to the fluctuating weather conditions. On warm spring days, put the plants outside for an hour at a time, then slowly but steadily increase the time.
Tip
Let nature do the work
If you want your daisies to grow in the same bed again next year, you can leave the breeding to nature. If a few wilted flowers remain, seeds can ripen there and the daisy and itself can sprout. You don't have to worry about the best time to sow or the correct cultivation.
