In contrast to its special growth, the flower of the araucaria, like most conifers, is rather inconspicuous. Nevertheless, there are a few peculiarities that you can observe in the flower formation of your araucaria.
When and how does an araucaria bloom?
Araucaria blooms in late summer (July-August) and shows male, brown, slimmer flowers and female, round, lighter flowers. Seed formation occurs after two to three years and the seeds are edible.
When does an araucaria bloom?
An araucaria blooms inlate summer, usually in July to August. An araucaria only produces its first flowers after about 30 years. Young, freshly planted monkey trees do not yet develop flowers and therefore no cones.
What do the Araucaria flowers look like?
The male flowers of the araucaria differ from the female ones. The male flowers arebrown and slightly slimmer, similar to pine cones, they grow hanging down the tree. The female flowers, on the other hand, areround and lighter, yellow to greenish in color. They grow upright, i.e. on the top of the branches.
When do seeds develop from the flowers of the araucaria?
After at least one, but sometimes only aftertwo to three years after flowering, the cones form seeds. Only female flowers form seeds, male flowers fall off after flowering.

It is worth leaving the araucaria cones on the tree until it produces seeds. On the one hand, the cones look attractive, on the other hand, the seeds obtained can be used for propagation or eaten, as they are edible.
