What is allowed during the breeding and breeding season?
During the breeding and planting season (01.03.-30.09.) tree pruning is permitted inprivate gardens and parksafter a prior check for the presence of live animals. Onhedges and bushes, the Federal Nature Conservation Act allowsgentle care cuts, provided there are no breeding or breeding sites.
When are trees not allowed to be cut?
In the period from1. March to September 30th Trees may not be cut down or felled. The regulation primarily serves to protect wild animals. During the breeding and breeding season, birds, mammals and amphibians raise their offspring in treetops and bushes.
For this reason, the Federal Nature Conservation Act also includes other trees. According to paragraph 39 (BNatSchG), it is forbidden tocut off trees, hedges, living fences and bushes during the breeding and planting seasonorput them on the stick.
When is pruning of trees allowed?
The breeding and setting period does not apply to trees on aarea used for gardening purposesand forgentle care cutson hedges and bushes. These pruning measures are permitted in the home gardenall year round:
- Trees in private gardens may be cut to maintain he alth, after prior inspection for breeding and resting places, such as bird nests.
- Gentle maintenance cuts on hedges are permitted all year round.
- From October 1st to February 28th, shrubs may be radically cut and planted.
- Municipal tree protection statutes may revoke exceptions to federal law and generally prohibit tree felling and radical hedge trimming.

In the natural garden, the pruning care of trees is based on the needs of birds, amphibians, small mammals and insects all year round. At any time of the year, a bush is carefully examined for winged, furry or spiny residents before pruning. Trimming of hedges is carried out after the end of the main breeding season at the end of July at the earliest. Bird-feeding trees with juicy berries are spared from pruning.
