Lavender often becomes bald from below over the years and no longer looks particularly attractive. In order to conceal these areas and visually enhance or even contrast the lavender, underplanting is recommended. But not every plant is suitable for this
Which plants are suitable for underplanting lavender?
Perennials, ground covers and herbs are suitable for planting under lavender as long as they comply with thedryandbarrenlocation requirements of lavender. In addition, the underplanting should not protrude higher than40 cm. Fit well:

If it is a larger lavender, the perennials can also become larger accordingly. However, it is important that the perennials do not overspread the lavender and thus rob it of too much light.
Furthermore, the perennials should prefercalcareoussoil and have no problem withdroughtness. The following perennials are ideal for underplanting:
- Catnip
- Widow Flower
- Rockrose
- Grass Lilies
- Blue tongue leek
- Pentecost carnations
- Bluebells
- Gypsophila
Planting lavender with herbs
TypicalMediterranean herbshave about the same location requirements as lavender. They can handle dry soil and are not demanding when it comes to nutrients. However, you should choose the herbdepending onthe respectivelavender variety. Some herbs such as sage are more suitable for underplanting higher lavender varieties such as the intermedia hybrids.
These herbs have proven useful as underplants for lavender and also for covering bare spots:

- Thyme
- Holy Herb
- Marjoram
- Tarragon
- Curry herb

Planting lavender with ground cover plants
Some ground covers havesimilar site requirements as lavender or at least they can adapt well. They cover the ground and the sometimes desolate lavender branches underneath with their foliage and often abundant flowers. Make sure that the ground cover plants do not overgrow or even intend to crowd out the lavender. With one or more of the following plants you are making the right choice:
- Storksbill
- woman's coat
- Rock Alyssum
- Upholstered silver diamond
- hornwort
- Scented Stones
- Sun Beauty
Plant lavender in the balcony box or pot
Since lavandula is also often used for balcony boxes or pots, underplanting it can also make sense there if it appears visibly barren or too dreary.lowand undemanding balcony flowers are particularly suitable for this. Even the balcony parapetoverhanging examples are fantastically suitable. The underplanting beautifies the lavender from below with its rich blooms, while it intoxicates with its violet flowers above. Purple to blue or white flowers fit in wonderfully, such as:
- True to men
- magic snow
- Blue pillow
- Broom heather
- Hanging Petunias
Tip
Mediterranean underplanting
On the surface, you can't go wrong with plants that come from similar regions to lavender (Mediterranean). They have similar location requirements. As long as they are small in growth, the lavender will cope with these as an underplant.
