The best flower bulbs for spring

When classic perennials are still in the starting blocks, the following bulb flowers transform the bed and balcony into a sea of flowers:

  • Grape hyacinth (Muscari latifolium) the ideal precursor for tulips and daffodils in the spring garden, 20 cm
  • Imperial Crown 'Chopin' (Fritillaria) delights with orange-red, nodding flowers in April and May, 70 cm
  • Tulips (Tulipa) draw colorful flower pictures in sunny beds during their flowering period, 10-70 cm
  • Daffodils (Narcissus) fulfill flower dreams in bright yellow from March to May, 20-35 cm

The ideal planting time for spring-flowering lilies (Lilium) extends from September to November. The multi-faceted species family includes Lilium martagon, the magnificent, easy-care Turk's-cuff lily with nodding, turban-like flowers in May and June on stems up to 120 cm high.

Early flowers for semi-shady locations

All bulb flowers presented so far are sun worshipers. This does not mean that low-light locations in the garden have to forego a sea of fresh spring flowers. The following species and varieties tolerate partial shade lighting conditions:

  • Spring anemone (Anemone blanda) with white or blue flowers and a delicate 15 cm height from March
  • Double wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa) enchants with green-white, double flowers from March
  • Fingered Larkspur (Corydalis solida) with red flowers and pinnate leaves from March
  • Winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) yellow-flowering classic, 15 cm small and early flowering from February

For an enchanting blossom festival in April and May, you can't go past checkerboard flowers (Fritillaria meleagris) in the creative garden. The distinctive bell-shaped flowers have a cube-like pattern in ivory white, purple and pink. At 30 cm, these bulbous flowers are the ideal size for beds and pots in semi-shady locations.

Tip

Only buy crisp, fresh flower bulbs. If an onion feels soft, it has already used up a large part of its nutrients or is about to sprout prematurely. Don't be afraid to pick up each copy in the store and check it for strength. You can get freshly harvested flower bulbs from consignors at the beginning of the season.
