How to successfully grow and harvest radishes?

There is always time for radishes – from March to September

If you start growing radishes at the beginning of March, you will harvest the first tender tubers at the beginning of spring. Depending on the variety, they only need 30 days of ripening. Due to their short culture period of four to eight weeks, they can be planned as a pre- or post-culture of other vegetables.

Radishes may not be cultivated again in the same location until three years later at the earliest. If crop rotation is not followed, diseases and pest infestations increase.

Prepare the seed area and grow radishes

Radishes love bright, partially shaded places. Either in the garden bed, balcony box or planter. Radishes thrive in a mixture of normal garden soil or potting soil (€2.00 at Amazon) with compost and a little sand. You should not sow them as neighbors of melons or cucumbers. Radish pests and diseases

From mid-May there is a danger from above from the cabbage fly and the cabbage white butterfly. A net over the radish bed protects the seeds. Flea beetles settle in the dry soil from below. These can be prevented by maintaining consistent soil moisture.

Remove radishes that are infected with radish black fungus immediately. Their rapid growth spares radishes from many pests and diseases. Before larvae, viruses or germs develop, the tubers are harvested and consumed.
