The multifaceted variety of peas gives the recreational gardener plenty of scope when creating the planting plan. The genus can be divided into three large groups for systematic temporal orientation regarding sowing and harvesting.
When is the pea growing and harvesting season?
The pea season begins with the sowing of shell peas in March and the harvest from May. Peas are sown from mid-April and harvested from June, while sugar peas are grown and harvested between April and July. Some varieties allow reseeding and winter varieties.

Shell peas – dry peasThe robust varieties can tolerate frosty temperatures. So they ring in the planting season:

- Harvest from May
PeasThanks to their fine consistency, they are ideal for fresh consumption and are a popular snack for children.

- Harvest from June
Sugar peasThe name says it all with this extra tender type of pea, which is eaten with its pod included.
- Sowing beginning/mid April
- Harvest in June and July
Most pea varieties allow for reseeding, and you can harvest the ripe pods from August onwards. Plant a few winter varieties in October to collect next May.
