Melons of different varieties are a delicious thirst quencher in midsummer with a low calorific value and high water content. While imported specimens are available from early summer, home-grown melons can only be harvested later.
When is melon season?
Melon season is in mid-summer, with imported melons from countries such as Spain, Hungary, Turkey and Israel available from early summer. Home-grown melons, on the other hand, can only be harvested later, until autumn.
The imported melons available all year round
Various types of melons are now available in supermarkets almost all year round at reasonable prices. Watermelons come mainly from the following countries during the peak season in spring and summer:
- Spain
- Hungary
- Türkiye
- Israel
In addition, ripe honeydew melons, refreshing sugar melons and the delicious Charentais melon also offer a variety of flavors.
Harvesting melons from your own garden
Since melons originally come from slightly warmer regions, cultivation in this country requires early cultivation of the young plants. This is the only way to harvest ripe watermelons or honeydew melons in the greenhouse or outdoors until autumn.
Tips & Tricks
The roots of young melon plants are relatively sensitive, which makes pricking out complicated. That's why it's advisable to sow melons in individual peat pots, even if they're pre-cultured on the windowsill.
