Like so many tropical fruits, avocados are in season all year round. As a rule, high-quality avocados are available commercially between September and May. However, our own fruits tend not to grow in our latitudes.
When is avocado season?
Avocados are in season all year round, with high quality fruit available between September and May. In Central Europe, growing your own is unlikely due to climatic conditions.
Home-grown avocados very rare
In their tropical homeland, avocado fruits grow all year round due to the climatic conditions. The avocados available in stores are usually unripe, but this does not mean a lack of quality. Even in nature, the fruits only ripen when they have fallen from the tree. Due to the complicated fertilization and the climatic conditions, home-grown avocados are hardly possible in Central Europe - the most conceivable thing would be to grow avocados with several trees in a specially air-conditioned greenhouse. However, this is likely to be a very complicated (and expensive) matter.
Tips & Tricks
Buy fruits that are as hard as possible in the supermarket. These ripen within a few days at home if they are wrapped in newspaper and stored with apples and bananas. For taste reasons, avocados should not be placed in the refrigerator.
