The quiet winter period offers enough time to sow leeks. You can grow young plants without any stress and start the season with an effective growth lead. We explain the procedure step by step.
How do you sow leeks correctly in winter?
Leek seeds are sown in winter in small cultivation pots with peat sand, coconut humm or seed soil, sieved thinly and placed on a partially shaded windowsill at 20 degrees. Germination occurs within 14 days. The strongest seedlings can then be transplanted into vegetable soil and continued to be cultivated at 12 to 14 degrees.
Uncomplicated sowing indoors
While nature is in deep hibernation in January, experienced hobby gardeners use the quiet time to sow leek seeds. A place behind glass is ideal, such as a heated greenhouse, winter garden or warm room.

It is poured with water from the hand sprayer. Watering from below is gentler on the seeds. To do this, place the pots in a water bowl until the substrate is soaked.
Pickering requires sensitivity
When the delicate cotyledons emerge from the seeds, the first hurdle of cultivation has been overcome. Now practice patience until at least 2 to 3 more pairs of leaves flourish. As a result, it becomes too crowded for the seedlings.
Take a close look at the seedlings and sort out the strongest specimens. Each plant is lifted out of the substrate using a pricking stick. Planted in standard vegetable soil, cultivate the offspring like adult leeks at 12 to 14 degrees.
Tips & Tricks
To ensure that the sowing soil is completely germ-free, carry out the disinfection yourself. You fill the substrate into a fireproof bowl and place the lid loosely on top. Then place the container in the oven for 30 minutes at 180 degrees top and bottom heat. It's a little quicker in the microwave at 800 watts for 10 minutes.
