The papyrus plant from the sour grass family, which comes from Africa, is not very maintenance-intensive, but does require a lot of moisture. The papyrus is also suitable as a houseplant. He feels particularly comfortable in a bright, light-flooded bathroom.
What is the proper care of papyrus?
Papyrus care includes: moist soil, tolerance of waterlogging, high humidity, lots of light and warmth. The plant is not hardy, so temperatures above 15 °C are ideal. Regular fertilization and watering, as well as propagation of offshoots, are possible.
Planting papyrus correctly
The real papyrus can even tolerate waterlogging. Therefore it can be easily planted at the edge of the pond in shallow water. However, it is not hardy and should be brought to its winter quarters in good time. Alternatively, papyrus also thrives in a heated winter garden or can spend the summer in pots in the garden.
Water and fertilize papyrus properly
During the growth and flowering period, you should fertilize your papyrus regularly about every three to four weeks. If you have recently planted the papyrus in compost soil, it will not need any additional fertilizer for a while. As a swamp plant, it is very thirsty and always wants to stay moist. So water your papyrus very often or make sure it has enough water.
So that the soil stays moist, we recommend using a planter or a saucer filled with water. This will prevent your papyrus from drying out. High humidity is also important for the papyrus plant to thrive. You should therefore spray houseplants with low-lime water from time to time.
The Papyrus in Winter
Papyrus should never overwinter outside, the sensitive plant will not survive because Papyrus does not like temperatures below 15 °C. Therefore, place the papyrus plant in a warm and bright room over the winter, such as a heated winter garden. You can also overwinter small plants in the living room.
Can I grow cuttings from papyrus?
Many gardeners like to propagate their plants themselves; this is also possible with papyrus and is not too difficult. Even beginners can propagate by dividing roots without any problems. You need a little skill and patience to grow cuttings.
