Currants need to be cut regularly. The older the shoots get, the fewer fruits they develop. The best time for pruning is immediately after harvest. Which shoots are removed depends on the variety.
When should you cut currants?
Currants should be cut twice a year: after harvest for pruning and in autumn for care pruning. Red and white currants are cut on the older shoots, while black currants are cut on the annual shoot branches.
Cut currants twice a year
- Pruning after harvest
- Care cutting in autumn
Cutting red and white currants
The bushes bear berries mainly on the two- and three-year-old shoots. After harvesting, all branches older than three years are cut.
Cutting blackcurrants
Most blackcurrants grow on annual shoot branches. By shortening the main shoots, new branches are formed.
Care cutting in autumn
Remove all diseased and dry shoots and, if necessary, thin out the currants a little.
Tips & Tricks
When pruning currant shoots, do not leave any stumps, but cut the branches as close to the base as possible.
