If hydrangeas are planted in the right location, they are relatively easy to care for and will grow into dense, richly flowering and large bushes over the years. Varieties such as the farmer's hydrangea, plate hydrangea or climbing hydrangea require no pruning and reach a considerable size.
How big can a hydrangea get?
Hytensias can grow up to 7 meters tall depending on the variety, climbing hydrangeas in particular reach this height. Care includes removing spent umbels, watering if necessary and, if necessary, heavy pruning to rejuvenate the shrub.

If the hydrangea is not cut back regularly, it will reach a size of at least two meters. This makes many varieties ideal as flowering, informal hedge plants. The climbing hydrangea, which belongs to the group of self-climbers, grows particularly large and plants fences, trees or bare house walls without climbing aid. Shade-tolerant, this hydrangea thrives in both partial shade and full shade. Thanks to its gnarled growth and attractive autumn colors, a tall climbing hydrangea creates attractive garden accents all year round. From June onwards it adorns itself with beautiful white flowers that stand out beautifully from the glossy dark green foliage. The rather flat umbels are very large and have a pleasantly sweet smell. The climbing hydrangea can grow up to seven meters high.
What to do if the hydrangea has grown too big?
If the hydrangea has grown too large, you can shorten the bush significantly and thereby rejuvenate it. However, the hydrangea will not bloom in the year of pruning, as you will inevitably have to remove the flower heads.
Alternatively, you can cut a hydrangea that has grown too large in stages and only cut back some of the old branches to around 50 centimeters. This will rejuvenate the bush, but you don't have to miss out on the attractive flower decorations.

Since the climbing hydrangea grows very large, it can gain considerable weight. Therefore, despite the numerous adhesive roots, it is advisable to attach a supportive climbing aid that supports the weight of the hydrangea.
