Basically, you can plant currants at any time between February and December. As with all berry bushes, the bushes grow best if you put them in the ground in autumn or early spring.
When should you plant currants?
The best time to plant currants is in autumn, especially for bare-root bushes. Alternatively, they can be planted in early spring. Container plants can also be planted in spring or summer, but require sufficient watering.
When is the best time to plant currants?
Like almost all berry bushes, currants grow fastest if you plant them in autumn. This is especially true for bare-root shrubs that were delivered without soil or that you have propagated yourself.
The soil is well moistened in autumn. It is then enough to water the newly planted shrub properly. Additional watering is only necessary if the fall is unusually dry.
If you missed the best planting time in autumn, you should wait until early spring to plant the currants. You then have to pay more attention to ensuring that the shrub receives enough moisture.
Cut back the currants before planting
Since the currant is planted so deep in the ground that the base of the bush is underground, it is advisable to prune the plant beforehand.
- Cut weak and damaged shoots
- Short remaining shoots by a third
- Remove broken and dead roots
Planting currants in summer
Shrubs from the garden store that are delivered in containers can easily be planted in the garden in spring or summer.
Their roots are already anchored in the potting soil and are therefore well supplied with nutrients.
Dig a planting hole for the shrub that offers enough space for the root ball and soil.
Planting Container Plants
Carefully remove the plant from the pot. The roots must not be injured. Only loosen the ball a little on the surface.
Soak the pot ball (€10.00 on Amazon) in a bucket of water for several hours before planting it.
Don't forget to water freshly planted currant bushes sufficiently in spring or summer. Make sure that there is no waterlogging.
Tips & Tricks
Caring for the currants will be easier if you create a watering ring after planting. This is a depression of several centimeters that is made around the bush. This ensures that the roots of the currant receive sufficient moisture in the first year.
