What are red bananas and where do they come from?

Red bananas are an exotic fruit that originally comes from India. They are smaller and edgier than yellow bananas, with a thick, red skin and creamy, soft flesh. Rich in potassium, fiber and vitamins, they are ideal for children, vegans, diabetics and raw food eaters.

Appearance and origin

This type of banana originally comes from India. Today the following countries are among the main growing regions:

  • Brazil
  • Ecuador
  • Indonesia
  • Kenya
  • Mexico
  • Phillipines
  • Thailand

Red bananas (Musa acuminata) are a little smaller than the yellow fruit bananas known here. They also have a somewhat angular shape. Their shell is very thick and firm. These bananas differ at first glance because of their reddish-brown color. In Germany you usually get dark red specimens. However, these are only ripe after a few days, as soon as the peel releases a little pressure and becomes darker.

The pulp is characterized by its particularly juicy consistency. It is dark yellow to slightly reddish in color.

Tip:

The banana is often not consumed in Germany because it is somewhat reminiscent of overripe bananas. Despite the high price, a taste of this exotic fruit is definitely worth it.

Ingredients

Red bananas contain a lot of potassium and fiber. Due to its high vitamin content, the easily digestible fruit is particularly suitable for children, vegans, diabetics and raw food eaters.

Vitamins and nutrients:

  • Iron
  • Fluorine
  • calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Manganese
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
  • Vitamins A, B, C, E

Note:

Children or allergy sufferers should first enjoy this fruit in small quantities to test its tolerance.

Usage

The intense aroma of the red banana develops especially when eaten raw. But it is also very popular as a fried, boiled or baked version. Spicy recipes mainly dominate. In soups or cakes they can be wonderfully combined with ginger, red pepper or alternatively with chili peppers.

Storage

Red bananas ripen quickly at room temperature. Apples support this process wonderfully at around 15 degrees Celsius. Both fruits are kept in a closed container for this purpose. Under no circumstances is the refrigerator suitable for storage.

If the ends of the banana show signs of rotting, you can cut them off. The interfaces dry up again on their own. The pulp is not infected.

Tips & Tricks

Red bananas are available in dried powder form. Vegans appreciate them as a sweet basis for fresh smoothies.
