What are the special features of the red mulberry?

The red mulberry is a decorative, easy-care and hardy tree that bears tasty fruit. It grows 10-20 meters high, has gray-brown bark and golden yellow leaves in autumn. The flowering period is between April and June, and the fruits are sweet and juicy.

The red mulberry is actually native to North America, which is why it is also called the American mulberry. It is considered one of the mulberry trees. Their fruits turn dark red, sometimes almost black. Then the fruits can hardly be distinguished from the black mulberry. However, an expert cannot confuse the trees with one another.

The look of the red mulberry

The red mulberry usually grows to a height of around 10 to 15 meters, where it particularly likes it sometimes up to 20 meters. It has a grey-brown bark that breaks into long vertical stripes as it ages. The coarsely toothed leaves are very variable in shape, from egg-shaped to heart-shaped, multi-lobed and unlobed. In autumn they turn golden yellow.

Depending on the variety, the flowering period of the red mulberry is from April to June. The flowers resemble pussy willows. Female inflorescences are only about 8 to 12 mm long, while male inflorescences are much larger at about 3 to 5 cm long.

The red mulberry is one of the so-called smart plants or indicator plants that indicate spring because they only sprout when the last frost has passed. This makes them very popular with vegetable gardeners. This means you know exactly when frost-sensitive varieties can be planted or sown outdoors.

Because of its interesting growth, the red mulberry is ideal as an ornamental tree for large gardens, but also equally well as a fruit tree. Because their fruits are very tasty. They are ready to harvest in summer and are very sweet and juicy. Unfortunately, they don't last very long. They spoil within a few days, so they should be processed quickly.
