When you think of lavender, dark purple to blue flowers usually appear in your mind's eye. However, few garden lovers know that there are around 25 different varieties of lavender - all of which have different requirements. Although the key data (lots of sun, little water, permeable soil) are the same, there are differences, for example in terms of planting distances.
What planting distance should you keep for lavender?
The ideal planting distance for lavender depends on the variety: lower varieties such as Blue Dwarf, Hidecote or Munstead require 20-30 cm of space, while taller varieties such as Spiiklavender require 40-50 cm of space. Be sure to ensure enough sun for each plant.
Don’t plant lavender too close together
Lavender generally requires a lot of space, which is why the plants should not be placed too close together. Basically, you can assume that a distance of around half the expected growth height is optimal. Lower varieties of lavender (such as Blue Dwarf, Hidecote or Munstead) require between 20 and 30 centimeters of space, while tall varieties such as the Spei Lavender, which can be up to one meter high, need between 40 and 50 centimeters. When planting, make sure that the individual plants do not take away the sun from each other later, and the plant should under no circumstances be planted under trees or bushes.
Tips & Tricks
Some potted plants cannot tolerate being planted in pots that are too large. However, this does not apply to lavender - the more space the plant has, the better! But also make sure to keep the distance to high-maintenance plants such as roses as large as possible.
