How do I properly overwinter tulip bulbs?

To overwinter tulip bulbs successfully, cover them in the bed with a layer of compost or leaf mold and additionally with brushwood or pine fronds. Tulip bulbs should be stored in the planter in a frost-free and dark place, ideally in newspaper or a box with sand, peat or sawdust.

Protecting tulip bulbs in the bed - this is how it works

Deep in the garden soil, your tulip bulbs are generally well protected in winter. However, this does not apply if particularly hard frosts dominate in your region. In this case, your heralds of spring will be happy to accept a warm cover. How to do it right:

  • Cut off all completely dead leaves by autumn at the latest
  • Spread a layer of compost or leaf mold over the planting site
  • Additionally spread out a layer of brushwood or pine fronds

Please note that the natural winter coat must be removed in good time before budding.

It's better to put away tulips in pots and balcony boxes

In view of the limited substrate volume, tulip bulbs behind the very thin walls of a planter are not safe from frost damage in winter. If space allows, put pots and balcony boxes in the dark, frost-free winter quarters. Alternatively, choose the following space-saving strategy:

  • After cutting back the leaves, remove the tulip bulbs from the substrate
  • Shake off the soil, but don't shower it off
  • Wrap the onions in newspaper or place in a box with sand, peat or sawdust
  • Store in a cool, dark cellar
  • Avoid all contact with moisture

Please take a look at the dug up tulip bulbs. With a little luck, the mother plant will have produced some bulbs for easy propagation. Please cut these off with a sharp, disinfected knife in order to overwinter them. The cuts are dusted with charcoal powder.
