Depending on how you keep your lucky bamboo, in water, hydroponics or soil, it will need more or less fertilizer. In general, however, too little fertilizer is tolerated better than too much fertilizer at once.
How often should you fertilize lucky bamboo?
For optimal growth, the lucky bamboo in hydroculture or a vase needs fertilizer every one to two weeks, while in soil it needs less fertilizer - a maximum of once a month. Make sure the water is clean, low in limescale and has an even water level.
Even more important than fertilizer is clean, low-lime or lime-free water for the he alth and long life of your lucky bamboo. Refill it regularly to keep the water level roughly the same. If the water is unclean or smells bad, replace it immediately, otherwise your Lucky Bamboo could rot or become moldy.
Lucky bamboo in the vase
In the vase, the lucky bamboo does not get any nutrients without fertilizer, so it needs to be fertilized regularly. About every seven to 14 days is sufficient. You can use commercially available fertilizer for hydroponics (€9.00 on Amazon). But only give a small dose so that no algae can form in the water.
Lucky bamboo in hydroponics
Similar to the vase, the easy-care lucky bamboo in hydroponics does not get any nutrients from the substrate. It is therefore dependent on external supplies in the form of fertilizer. Here too, fertilization should be carried out every week or every 14 days. You can get special fertilizer for hydroponic plants at the nursery or hardware store.
Lucky bamboo in soil
If you have planted your lucky bamboo in soil, then fertilize a little less often, as the soil also contains nutrients. In fresh soil, the bamboo can survive without fertilizer for several months. If you would like to transplant your lucky bamboo from the vase or hydroponics into soil, then wait until it is sufficiently rooted.
The most important things in brief:
- fertilize regularly every one to two weeks in the vase or in hydroponics
- For the time being, avoid fertilizer in fresh potting soil
- fertilize rarely in older soil, maximum once a month
- It's better to fertilize too little than too much
- Make sure the water level is even when kept without soil
- replacing dirty or smelly water
Tip
When planted in soil, the lucky bamboo only needs a little fertilizer, as soil already contains nutrients. However, without soil it relies on regular fertilization.
